What Home Security Camera is best for me?

Best fit security camera…

Spoiler Alert

It depends on your budget. But I recommend the Logitech Circle 2.

What Home Security Camera is best for me?

I often get asked the question, “I am looking to get security cameras for my home, which would I recommend?”
I would often respond with “What is your budget?”
Then followup question “Is it for outdoor or indoor monitoring?”
When it comes to modern-day security cameras I always point out the total cost of ownership. That is, apart from the cost of the camera hardware, one should consider the reoccurring monthly or annual subscription fee for video cloud storage.
As of writing this article, I by default recommend three brands. Google Nest, Logitech Circle 2 and Ubiquiti Unifi Cameras. Out of these cameras, I have installed the Google Nest and Ubiquiti Camera and happy with both brands. The Logitech Circle 2 opens up the possibility of using the Apple Homekit Secure video, which is why I am considering it as an option. Captured below is a breakdown of different points used to identify the camera best for your.

What I end up paying while I use the camera

Camera BrandOne time costAnnual re-occurring cost
Google Nest$169.00 USD$300.00 USD
Logitec Circle 2$179.00 USD$100.00 USD
Logitec Circle 2* with HomeKit$179.00 USD$36.00 USD
Unifi Camera^$ 278.00 USDNone`

* Requires Apple iCloud storage plan greater than 200GB. And either 4th Gen or greater Apple TV or Apple Homepod acting as the Homekit hub.
^One-time purchase of what is called UniFi Cloud Key, which comes with a 1TB HDD.
`There is no subscription fees because physical device is purchased and installed in your home.

The cheapest solution is no doubt the Ubiquiti Unifi Camera setup, but you need to be a little more tech-savvy to seamlessly complete the install.
The second cheapest would be the Logitec Circle 2 with the Apple Homekit integration, this is, however, taking the assumption that you already have an Apple Homekit setup with a hub.
The third cheapest is Logitech Circle 2 with the Logitech cloud storage.
Needless to say, the Google camera might be the cheapest to install but cloud storage is the most expensive out of all four considered solutions.

Although I only have experience recommending and installing Ubiquiti and Google cameras, based on my analysis I will also recommend the Logitech Circle 2. It appears to check off both ease to install and affordability.
